The 2012 Audi R8 Spyder is the convertible version of Audi's R8 GT super car. The V-10 option offers blinding speed, plus a manual transmission option lets enthusiasts get their gear-stirring fix. Great performance and handling are mixed with tough luxury and a drop top to make the R8 Spyder a car all about experience. Under the hood, the Audi R8 Spyder sports either a 4.2-liter V-8 or a 5.2-liter V-10, each rocketing the car from zero to 60 mph in about 4 short seconds. Although this vehicle and can reach a top speed of around 190 mph, you can expect to pay for it at the pump as fuel-economy suffers in a huge way. The mid-engine configuration and all wheel drive make the machine exceptional at handling.

As compared to the R8 GT, the Spyder is not much different. The biggest variation is that the carbon fiber front bumper has an integrated diffuser and the 0.04" difference in height have been changed. The United States version should weigh in around 3,800 pounds, which is about right for a V-10 convertible. Not one detail has been overlooked when it comes to styling. From the fierce front grille to the chiseled body lines to the insanely hip wheels, this is a vehicle other drivers see coming a mile away. The interior is spare compared to Audi's other offerings, but this isn't too much of a concern. The R8 focuses more on speed than Audi's other luxurious features. It is still very comfortable and has an adjustable suspension. There is also a lot of opportunity to personalize the Audi R8 Spyder, with nine paint colors, three canvas colors, and 11 options for upholstery. The interior is very driver-centric; though it lacks some design characteristics that other Audi models have.

The convertible top is canvas, which is out of place in a world where folding hard tops rule. While this may seem less than ideal, the fabric choice actually reduces weight and helps keep the center of gravity very low, which improves handling. Wind noise is not terrible with the top down, in fact, occupants can carry a conversation at normal levels. Wind noise through the soft top is noticeable though, but not so bad that it becomes a distraction. The 2012 Audi R8 Spyder is as beautiful as it is fast. The car combines breakneck speed with the agility of an Olympic figure skater, all with a taste of the luxury that Audi is known for.
