The Maserati GranCabrio convertible coupe comes with the precision handling of the Maserati Stability Programme. It features top of the line breaks and an ABS system that ensures a quality breaking system. The car is able to recognize emergency breaking which gives assistance in panic situations. It also comes with an electronic park break feature. This was designed with the intent of replacing the traditional hand break. When the car is turned off the electronic park break automatically turns on and turns off once the engine starts. The GranCabrio appears to be in the same class as the Porsche 911, the Jaguar XK and the BMW 6 Series. Maserati appears to be trying to gain a competitive edge against their competition by adding new and innovative features to the 2012 GranCabrio model.

The GranCabrio's engine is a 4.2 litre V8 that reaches a powerful torque of 490Nm. An improved power unit allows for improved gear changes and a quieter engine. The transmission is a sporty six speed automatic and includes a hydraulic torque converter that features four modes and includes the option of driving in standard or automatic transmission.

One unique feature of the GranCabrio is the convertibles hard top. The cars hard top was designed to maximize interior and trunk space and has its own compartment to improve efficiency as opposed to most other retractable hard tops that almost eliminate trunk space. The GranCabrio's hardtop can be retracted in an impressive 28 seconds. Maserati also believes that the quality of design in their hard top will allow drivers to use the car year round.

Another unique feature of the GranCabrio is the exhaust system. The exhaust system is triggered through a by-pass valve that is engaged through a button located on the steering wheel. Once the button is pressed and the valves are open it immediately allows the engine to exceed 3000RPM.

The engine of the GranCabrio is positioned behind the front axel which drastically improves weight distribution from the 2011 model and increases handling and turning.

Another new feature added to the 2012 GranCabrio is a newly copyrighted roll bar that is hidden behind the hood cover and activates in just 190 milliseconds. The new roll bar will by shattering the rear window and is said to have zero risk for passengers. Maserati states this is one of the best new features about the 2012 model.

The safety reviews and certifications for the 2012 Maserati GranCabrio convertible coupe is limited and there are few credible reviews available to the public at present. There has been nothing released from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and there appears to be no tests on rear crash safety. The safety specifications state that the GranCabrio comes equipped with rear parking sensors, front and side air bags along new head and chest air bags, an improved seatbelt design and anti-lock brakes. Although credible safety reviews for the 2012 GranCabrio are limited, with the new roll bar feature and improvements to the air bag system there is no reason to believe Maserati has cut any corners on safety especially if they plan to remain competitive with Porsche, Jaguar and BMW.
