Part 1: Introduction

When it comes to SUVs there are a lot of choices on the market. One can select a vehicle that is rugged and built for off-road adventures. There are vehicles that are practical for hauling people and goods. Finally, there are vehicles that are built with luxury in mind. With the Mercedes-Benz G Class G550 SUV buyers will get a little bit of all of it. The name alone implies luxury as that is what the Benz is most known for. However, this vehicle once used by the military proves to be both rugged and practical at the same time. What it is not, however, is efficient.

The Mercedes-Benz G Class G550 SUV has always been built tough and that did not change when it transferred over for personal use. From the outside it is obvious that the vehicle was made for combat. Even with the typical styling the Benz this SUV just can't get past its history. While it does make the driver feel as though the vehicle is indestructible, it does not lend well to a relaxing daily driver. Adding in the option for heavy duty armor plating only adds to the military feel of the SUV.

Inside the Mercedes-Benz G Class G550 SUV is a blend of the luxury that one expects from Mercedes and the look that is expected of a military vehicle. Though there is plenty of leather and high quality materials, the layout itself leaves a lot to be desired. Controls are in obscure places that make them less user-friendly. The high quality of the inside also can't make up for the utter lack of space. Legroom is at a minimum, even for the driver. It does possess plenty of cargo space so that hauling is made simple, but that and the luxurious materials used simply cannot hide the fact that other SUVs offer a more comfortable and easy to use cabin.

When it comes time to take the Mercedes-Benz G Class G550 SUV out on the road drivers will see a combination of benefits and downfalls of the vehicle. The strong engine makes this mammoth vehicle move quick even on acceleration. However, the size hinders its drivability. Unlike competing SUVs, the handling and steering of the G550 is poor. It is obvious that the vehicle was created for, and works best for, the off-road adventures. In that aspect, it can tackle any terrain without effort. On the main roads, however, it leaves a lot to be desired.

The reason that the Mercedes-Benz G Class G550 SUV can start and move so quickly in spite of its size is found under the hood. This SUV receives its power from a 5.5 liter 382 horsepower V8. Working with that engine is a seven speed automatic, limited slip rear differential, four wheel drive and front, center and rear differentials that lock. It only takes the G550 about six and a half seconds to hit sixty. The power of the SUV costs a lot in fuel economy even compared to other SUVs. It stays in the range of 12 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway.
