Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi began building cars in 1917 and established operations in the United States market in 1981.Over the last 30 years they have offered affordable quality cars that are fun to drive with strong performance and durability. Today's range includes the Mitsubishi sedan, coupe, convertible and crossover SUV models. The most prominent car in the Mitsubishi range is the popular Lancer sedan.
Although the Mitsubishi sedan vehicles do not always provide the best fuel economy or have the best looking interiors they do offer a sporty alternative to standard sedans available on the market from various competitors such as Ford and Honda. Key competitive vehicles in this affordable small car class include the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte and Volkswagen Golf.
The Mitsubishi sedan is available as 2 key models, the Lancer and the larger mid-size family oriented Galant. The Lancer has 3 variants, the standard compact sedan, the Sportback performance car with cargo space and the Evolution street legal race performance vehicle. These variants provide plenty of choice when choosing a Mitsubishi sedan. The base model LancerDE starts at $15,695 featuring a 2.0liter 4 cylinder engine with 148 horsepower at6,000rpm. This engine can be increased to a 2.4 liter 168 hp engine in the GT model starting at $19,845 or the SE model starting at $20,195. For additional performance the Ralliart model offers a much more powerful 2.4 liter turbocharged intercooled engine with 237 hp starting at $27,995.
The Lancer DE base engine provides145 foot pound of torque at 4,200rpm (the GT and SE provide 167 foot pound of torque at 4,100 rpm; the Ralliart boosts this performance significantly to 253 foot pound of torque at 2,500 - 4,750 rpm). Fuel economy is a reasonable 34mpg on the highway and 25mpg in the city for the base model DE (fuel economy suffers a bit with the more powerful engines: 29/22 for the SE, 30/23 for the GT and 25/18 for the Ralliart). The fuel tank holds 15.5 gallons.
The Sportback Lancer is available in 2 variants which offer plenty of cargo space. The standard Sportback ES features the same engine and performance characteristics as the Lancer DE and the Sportback GT is the same as the Lancer GT. Fuel economy for the ES is 32 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg in the city and this is slightly reduced for the GT at 29 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city.
The final Lancer model is the Evolution which is aMitsubishi sedan designed as a street performance vehicle that offers high performance at an affordable price starting from $34,495. The base model features a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine with 291 horsepower at6,500 rpm and 300 foot pound of torque at 4,000 rpm providing a significant boost in power over other models of the Lancer. Fuel economy does suffer with this additional power achieving 23 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city with a 14.5 gallon fuel tank.
The final Mitsubishi Sedan the family oriented midsize Galant starts at $21,899 featuring a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine with 160 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 157 foot pound of torque at 4,000 rpm. Fuel economy is 30mpg on the highway and 21mpg in the city with a 17.7 gallon fuel tank.
