Porsche has a history, but that history is in one market. For decades the company has dominated the world of sports cars. Whether it was their line of coupes or the many convertible versions, the Porsche sports cars were known to be top of the line. That is why they are often, and have always been, used as rally cars and race cars. The performance and handling is unbeatable and has earned them a solid reputation among enthusiasts, drivers and even reviewers. That is why it was a risk for the company to enter into the SUV market. However, with that market continuing to grow it seemed only the natural progression to do so. A Porsche SUV was virtually unheard of until the release of the Cayenne.
Mixed feelings abounded about the idea of a Porsche SUV. Many felt, as they would later with the introduction of a sedan, that Porsche belonged in the sports car arena and should not alter from that. The company had a different idea and in 2002 they released the Porsche Cayenne. The five seat mid-size SUV was the first on the market from the company, and was the first vehicle produced with a V8 engine since the 928 was discontinued in 1995. The hope was that they could bring the same performance and luxury to the SUV market that had dominated the sports car world for so long.
The goals that were set out with the release of a Porsche SUV were realized quickly. The Cayenne had a stronger performance and better handling than any other SUV on the market at the time. The powerful engine only added to the capabilities. The second generation was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and was a bit shorter and smaller than the previous model. However, it was loaded with options to add to the luxury already provided.
While the Cayenne may be the only Porsche SUV, it quickly fulfilled the promises that were implied simply by the name. The luxury inside and out is unmatched in any SUV and the quality of the materials used is second to none. Everything is laid out in a way that appears classy while still being easy to maneuver and use. The steering is exact, the engine is strong and the handling impresses even the biggest skeptic. With a host of features and options, the Cayenne is certain to please virtually anyone.
There are ways in which this Porsche SUV is lacking. It does not have a third row seat that has become common in most SUVs. It also has less cargo space than other models. However, it provides a thrilling ride that cannot be obtained from the average SUV. The Cayenne is a vehicle that completely lives up to the expectations that one would have when they buy a Porsche. Sporty, fun and full of luxury is what buyers will get when they purchase the Cayenne. The small differences simply do not seem to matter.
