The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) annually ranks cars and SUVs for their safety based on protection from side, front and rear collisions. The Institute uses a scientific approach to evaluating cars for safety and runs each vehicle through a series of well-designed tests. A spokesperson for the IIHS has found great improvements in the performance of SUVs in these crash tests.

One feature of the safest SUVs is electronic stability control which prevents a car from spinning out by enabling drivers to maintain control of their cars during intense steering maneuvers. With this feature in 87% of all new SUVs, it can be significant in reducing the risk of a rollover.

Another feature of the safest SUVs is side airbags which are not as common on SUVs as they are on cars. Side and curtain airbags add restraints that protect passengers from head and neck injuries. Safe SUVs also have good accident avoidance features such as braking systems that allow the driver to control the movement of a vehicle during an accident and enhanced rear visibility with rearview cameras so as to have a better feel for the surrounding vehicles in an accident situation.

The Chevrolet Traverse is the safest SUV with antilock disk brakes, traction and stability control and front seat side-impact airbags and all three rows with side-curtain airbags. The Traverse earned a five-star rating for overall performance in the government's new more strenuous crash tests and the highest rating of "Good" for the Insurance Institute for Highway standard crash tests.

Along with the Chevrolet Travers is the GMC Acadia as one the best safe SUVs on the market.? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranked the GMC Acadia as "Good" in both frontal-offset and side impact tests the government's more strenuous crash testing gave the vehicle a top five-star rating. Front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are standard for all three rows of the vehicle as antilock brakes and traction and stability control.

One of the safest SUVs is the Lincoln MKX, with standard safety features of antilock disk brakes, stability and traction control and front-side and side-curtain airbags. The vehicle can also be had with a blind spot warning system. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset and side-impact protection, the vehicle received the highest rating of good and a five-star rating in the government' similar crash testing procedures.

The Audi Q7 is one the best safe SUVs, with standard side curtain airbags in all three rows and optional second row side airbags. The vehicle also features antilock brakes, stability and traction control, rear parking sensors and a blind spot warning system. Government crash testing rated it five stars for front and side protection and the rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for frontal-offset and side-crash tests was "Good."

The Subaru Tribeca is another of the best safe SUVs, with active front restraints, side airbags for the front seats, side curtain airbags, stability control with a rollover sensor, antilock brakes and traction control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the vehicle "Good" for frontal offset and side-impact crash test and government crash test ratings are a five for both front-and-side impact protection.

Another safe SUV is the Subaru Forrester which includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front-seat airbags, and front-and rear side-curtain airbags. Government ratings give it five stars in all frontal and side tests and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the vehicle "Good" for frontal offset and side and rear impact and roof strength crash tests. Its accident avoidance is better than average.

The Toyota Highlander is one the safest SUVs, with a comprehensive list of safety features which includes seven airbags that cover all three rows of seats, a driver-side knee airbag and whiplash-reducing active front head restraints. Antilock brakes are also standard with hill-start assist and hill-descent control. Government ratings gave the vehicle five stars frontal and side impacts and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the vehicle "Good" in similar tests.

Another of the safe SUVs was the Saturn Outlook, a large crossover SUV. Its standard safety features included antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, stability control that sensed rollovers and GM's OnStar Service. In government tests for both front- and side-impact tests, the vehicle scored a top five out of five stars.

The Hyundai Tucson is one of the safest SUVs, having earned the distinction of being on the Top Safety Picks of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Its frontal offset and side-impact protection as well as roof strength tests were all rated "Good". Standard safety equipment includes stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, active front headrest, front side and side-curtain airbags, and hill-start assist and hill-descent control.

The Volvo XC90 is another safe SUV, with ratings of "Good" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in their frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests and five stars from the government's similar impact tests. Safety features that are standard on the vehicle include stability control, antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags and whiplash front seats with an optional warning system that alerts drivers of nearby vehicles.
