Part 2: Trims & Features

Over their long and fruitful history Volvo has always had a flawless record for producing vehicles that had every aspect of safety taken care of. However it seemed that Volvo was gaining a reputation for producing vehicles where austere practicality took preference over style. Well that all changes with Volvo's current models, with many reviews reporting that the XC90 is almost revolutionary in terms of its sumptuous interior trim. Dominating the XC90 cabin is Volvo's now trademark slim floating center instrument stack finished in brushed metal.

The Volvo XC 90 Crossover SUV come in four trim packages, starting from the basic moving on to the Premier level, then the Premier Plus and climbing to the top Platinum level.

Standard features on the XC90 include fog lamps, roof rails, heated exterior mirrors, super durable fabric upholstery tilting and telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, climate control, CD player, HD radio, eight speaker sound system, Bluetooth, phone and audio connectivity and sixteen inch wheels with 235/65R H all season tires.

Those whose budget stretches to the Premier will be rewarded with such extras as an eight way power adjustable passenger seat, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, parking sensors and an attractive trim matched cargo cover. .The Premier Plus trim adds to this, keyless ignition, power operated folding rear head restraints, power operated lift gate, and front and rear parking sensors. Moving up to the Platinum trim will mean that the XC90 will come with twelve speaker audio system, rearview camera, and eighteen inch alloy wheels with 255/45R18 all season tires.

As you would expect, safety features abound on the Volvo XC90 starting from front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and whiplash-reducing front seats, stability control, Volvo's City Safety feature that will, without driver intervention, cause the vehicle to apply its brakes to prevent a collision. The XC90 comes with Volvo's DTSC system planned to detect and intervene when the vehicle is liable to go into a skid.

Fuel consumption for the Volvo XC90 3.2 liter 6 cylinder engine, according to the US EPA, averages at 19 miles per gallon, with 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the open road being reported in most reviews.

The Volvo XC90 needs to face some serious opposition in the luxury compact SUV niche with such serious contenders as the Buick Enclave, Ford Flex, Acura MDX, Lexus RX 350 and Volkswagen Touareg.
